FAQ

How much does it cost to join?

We offer a 4 week trial to see if your child is happy, once they have been invested subscriptions will then start – this is currently £48.00 per term.

All uniform costs can been seen on the https://shop.scouts.org.uk/

Sweatshirts are generally the only part of the uniform that needs to be bought, as navy blue trousers/shorts or school trousers/shorts are acceptable. Many people like to find second-hand uniform too.

If you are concerned about costs – parents can contact the Section Leader in confidence, to see what we can do to help. In most cases support is available to make sure nobody misses out.

What will happen when my child starts Beavers?

Your child will be welcomed to the group and encouraged to join in with the activities for that session.

They will be introduced to the Leaders who run the Beaver colony

They will be put into a Lodge (the name given for the small groups within Beavers) and they will have a Lodge Leader.

What will happen when my child starts Cubs?

They will be paired up with one of the Cub “buddies” who will look after them during the session.

Parents are welcome to stay for the first session – Akela will have a chat with the parent/s and introduce the other leaders.

After 3-4 weeks of attending, they will then be invested as a Cub.

What will happen when my child starts Scouts?

For their first session, they will be introduced to the rest of the troop as well as the leaders. There will be games and other activities where they can get to know the other Scouts better.

After 3-4 weeks of attending, they will then be invested into the troop and will start their progress to earning badges and awards.

Do I need to buy uniform straight away?

There’s no requirement to buy a uniform straight away. At first, your child will be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something they feel comfortable in. Once your child is ready to be invested (normally 3-4 weeks), then a uniform will be required.

Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of the group. It also gives them a place to show off all the badges they earn.

Where can I buy uniform from?

We recommend buying uniforms from:

The Surrey Heath Scout Shop

Open Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm during term time.

Camberley 478 Scout Headquarters, 270 London Road, Camberley, GU15 3JP

Alternatives include:

Scout Store.

What happens if my child can’t attend a session?

There’s no issue if your child can’t make it for certain sessions. Sometimes school trips and other activities mean that your child needs to miss a session. The work towards badges often overlaps across activities carried out on different sessions so they aren’t likely to miss out entirely. It’s helpful if you can let the leader know in advance of an absence to help them keep organised.

Are there any additional costs involved?

Trips, camps and activities that take place away from the usual meeting place are usually charged separately.

Typically, a section might aim to do a relatively low-cost activity such as swimming once per term.

More adventurous trips and camps are also organised every so often and we try to give advanced notice so that you can plan in advance.

Do they do indoor and outdoor activities all year round?

In Scouting, we love getting outdoors, however, the weather is an important factor!

It’s likely that sections will have a lot of indoor activities in the colder, wetter months and a lot of outdoor activities when it’s warm and dry. It’s also an important part of Scouting to learn how to operate in less ideal weather conditions!

Leaders will dynamically adapt programmes based on the forecast and current weather conditions to make sure everyone is having fun.

Can parents attend sessions?

Parents are welcome to stay for the first session and are encouraged to join a parent rota to help out with running sessions thereafter.

My child has a medical issue – can they still join?

Scouting is open to all, and we can usually tweak things to make sure everyone can join in the fun. If you have any questions about accessibility, please send us a message.
